Science Seminar Speaker Series

The College of Arts and Sciences created its Science Seminar to provide our students with professional development opportunities. By attending Science Seminar events, we hope participants will:

  • Interact with and learn from the speakers
  • Identify complementary career opportunities
  • Discover routes to employment and internship prospects
  • Engage in valuable networking with professionals and peers  

Science Seminar events are free and open to the public. A light lunch will be served at each event.

Exploring Mountain Building in Alaska Through Geophysics

Presenter: Dr. Mark Bauer, Indiana Tech Assistant Professor of Physics

Summary: The Saint Elias Mountains, spanning Alaska, the Yukon Province and British Columbia, are the highest coastal mountain range and also contain the steepest topographic gradient and uplift rates on earth. This talk will begin with a review the general concepts of plate tectonics and the specific tectonic setting of southeast Alaska. We will proceed with an overview of the physics of seismic imaging, then conclude with animations that illustrate the tectonic processes that have shaped this portion of Alaska and Canada.
