Professional Experience

I have worked approximately six years in both the public and private laboratory fields, working specifically in the areas of DNA analysis, Serology, and Microbiology. As such, I have been employed as a DNA Specialist, Quality Assurance/Quality Control Manager, and Forensic Biologist through my laboratory employment opportunities. My most recent tenure in the laboratory realm involved working as a Forensic Scientist with the Indiana State Police, Laboratory Division. I have extensive research and analytical training expertise pertaining to real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification of Short Tandem Repeat (STR) DNA targets, as well as molecular analysis of microbial and human-derived RNA targets for body fluid identification.

In addition, I have extended knowledge pertaining to serological presumptive and confirmatory testing procedures, DNA extraction, DNA quantitation, mixture DNA profile interpretation, and statistical analysis of genetic profiles. My forensic training also includes knowledge in the following fields: drug analysis; questioned document analysis; firearms; fingerprinting; photography; trace evidence analysis; crime scene investigation. In addition to my laboratory-derived experience, I have also worked as a Criminal Justice, Biology and Forensic Science educator, acting as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor for traditional and online learning platforms for several years.

Additional Information

I recently served as a Forensic Scientist for the Indiana State Police in the Biology Unit, where I focused on serological and genetic analyses. I also have served as a former Quality Control and Quality Assurance Manager in a private Microbiology laboratory, where I performed a wide range of analytical and forensic-based testing on various products for human consumption and interaction in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), specifically dealing with 40 CFR 141 (drinking water), 40 CFR 136 (wastewater), and 40 CFR 503 (biosolids) in addition to analyzing foodstuffs and questionable products for safety-related concerns. I also have several publications associated with novel analytical tools currently under review for formal use in the Forensic Sciences which deal with both bodily fluid analysis and RNA analysis for the identification of said fluids. I am a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the American Society for Microbiology, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Community, and the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences. I also work as a publication reviewer for the Journal of Dairy Sciences (internationally recognized dairy research) and I am an editorial board member of the journal FineFocus (undergraduate student research), produced by Ball State University.

I enjoy learning and growing as both an educator and scientist through research and inquiry-based applications. Growing up in a small town in Southern Indiana, I’ve always been fascinated with the study of Biology and I have worked my entire life to better understand how we can use science to better mankind. I feel that Forensic Science is an explosive and dynamic field of scientific discovery that is powerful in its scope and application within the Criminal Justice system. As such, I firmly believe in continued research into new methods of analyses within this field while also maintaining a careful perspective on the potential ramifications of this realm of investigation as it pertains to ethical use and implementation.
